RAYMOND SHAW

Prior to founding Shaw Graham Kersh, Raymond’s career was with Fisher Meredith and Garstangs, where he worked with Paul Graham. He heads up our private client department. Raymond is a former President of the London Criminal Courts Solicitors Association, and continues to represent solicitors in dealings with Government, Judiciary, the CPS and the Bar. His practice encompasses fraud and related financial offences, serious crime, supervision of Very High Cost Case legal aid work and privately funded work of all types.
Raymond is a ranked lawyer in Chambers and Partners 2012 and his practice is noted for its meticulous commitment to every client’s cause.

- 2012 R v M Currently representing the principal Defendant in a Serious Fraud Office prosecution for conspiracy to defraud, relating to the investment of over £50 million of pension funds.
- 2012 R v M Currently advising senior private banker whose extradition is sought by UK authorities in connection with large scale bank fraud
- 2012 R v D&B Ongoing representation of two directors in connection with offences under s216 Insolvency Act 1986
- 2011 R v B Retrial of a businessman accused of multiple rapes by his cleaner; client acquitted of all charges.
- 2011 R V O Professional private educator facing allegations of sexual contact with child. Client acquitted.
- 2011 R v C Client (previously convicted of fraud) in widely reported case involving targeting of Olympic athletes. Convicted only of those counts indicating Defendant had not set out to commit fraud at the outset, reducing sentence significantly
- 2011 R v H Representing Defendant in a sex worker trafficking case, described by the UK Border Agency as one of the biggest operations of its kind ever undertaken in the UK
- 2010 R v DC Successful representation of lawyer accused of commercial importation of cocaine. The ‘’Newton hearing’’ confirmed that the half kilogramme of cocaine was for personal use only, massively reducing the guideline sentence and avoiding confiscation proceedings entirely
- 2009 R v A Double Manslaughter/Health and Safety; highly publicised trial resulting from the death of two visitors and injuries sustained by many others whilst attending an art installation/exhibit in July 2006. The case involved highly complex expert evidence from engineers and meteorologists. Defendent acquitted of both manslaughter charges
- 2009 R v M Confiscation; following theft of electrical equipment worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, prosecution sought confiscation in similar sum alleging client had access to over £900,000. Successfully defended and order made in sum under £8,000
- 2008 R v W Successfully represented consultant in investigation by Deloitte’s on behalf of the hospital trust/health authority regarding alleged fraudulent over claim for relocation expenses
- 2008 R v F Confiscation proceedings; an example of a highly publicised ‘VAT-carousel fraud’ in which the confiscation benefit figure was in excess of £200 million. Granted leave to appeal on issue of status of pension policies
- 2007 R v M Conspiracy to defraud the Bank of England; described in the national press as the ‘biggest counterfeiting case ever’. Prosecuted by the Fraud Prosecution Office of the CPS. Successfully defended by proving M was a victim of fraud. Defendant acquitted
- 2006 R v E-J Successfully represented one of seven Defendants charged with conspiracy to defraud banks of more than a million pounds. Client one of only two to be acquitted
- 2005 R v H Represented premiership footballer accused of assaulting an off-duty police officer. Grievous bodily harm charge reduced following negotiation to one of common assault
- 2005 R v A Successful representation of a Liberal Democrat Councillor accused of involvement in the ‘Hackney Election Fraud’
- 2005 R v K and B Successful representation of two accused of multi million pound investment conspiracy to defraud a member of the Jordanian Royal Family
